A truly beautiful and fascinating variety of garbanzo bean (Channa). This is the original desi variety of chickpeas which gave it the common name Kala Channa (Black Chickpea). Today The term Kala channa is used for the more common brown varieties. As with most deeply colored crops, black garbanzo is rich in antioxidant compounds. When cooked it leaches a lot of the color, making the gravy a rich deep color and the beans themselves become a dark brown color. It great for however you use regular Channa, Channa Masala, Kadala Curry, etc. Or more interesting uses like Sporuted channa, Black Chickpea hummus, and more. 
 
Chickpea/ Garbanzo is an excellent nitrogen fixer and a great companion crop, especially with winter grains like wheat and millets. They produce a long tap root that can access soil moisture from deep in the soil, which is why it is often grown without any irrigation in winters using just residual moisture from the monsoon, in places without the facility for irrigation.
